Thanks for the clarification.

So I agree that there can feasibly be a concern over short term memory,
even if I don't share that concern.  So what to do about it....

If you're in the camp that believes FLAC decoding on the player damages
the sound, then this won't help, but if you are happy to stream FLAC
then you can extend this 'golden period' to about 45s.  You could even
use a very high bit rate MP3  - the golden period is proportional to
the amount of compression in the file.

And if you are concerned about different sections of a track not being
comparable because they sound different anyway, I imagine you could
easily pick a 30s section of a test track, extract it to a file,
duplicate it at the end of that file, and thereby create a single track
with a repeating sample of music.  You could then do the cable pull test
by pulling the cable at the beginning of the repeat.  Perhaps you could
put a short silence between the samples to act as the cue for the cable
pull.
