You haven't said where the interconnects are connected. Are they between source and preamp, or between preamp and poweramp? My earlier reply was made assuming that you have them between source and preamp, and that being the case then your methodology is flawed if the material being played on the source is stereo. You will hear a difference because the left and right channels are not the same. If the cables are connected between preamp and poweramp then there's nothing wrong with your methodology, and any conclusions you come to will be sound.
