If that's true then you've just explained the problem.  I'm using the
TP's Toslink output (exclusively) into a Behringer DEQ2496 and then
digital AES cable into a Behringer DCX2496 crossover-- the objective
being to limit the number of D/A conversions in the signal path to just
one; coming out of the DCX to the amps. 

Also thanks for the comment about my DIY ESL's... they are far and away
the coolest project I've ever done (it's a psychosis, actually).
