I wouldn't worry about transfering even 16 bytes 80 times per second :)

As you said you may change resoltion - and do other dirty things
(which are somehow handle by my IRQ handler - and I've probably 
even fixed those mysterious problem via usage of different registers)

Well acceing registers might be a problem for each card.

Maybe extending DRM drivers with this capability might be a good way ???
