Hi Jackie,

That's an interesting story......sad, but interesting.... so 3rd
grandmother.....about what year was she born? I'm just curious because it seems
odd to me that I've never seen these kinds of records before and I've read so
many Sao Jorge records.....the only other one that ever alluded to such was
from 1872 in Rosais that said the child was from the "crime" of incest. Other
than that they are all so similar regarding the births to single mothers.

Regards,

Nancy

I have never actually seen a record like that but it doesn't surprise me that
they would identify if it that way. My 3rd great grandmother according to
family history was never allowed to actually marry my 3rd great grandfather
because she was the result of a rape. Her mother ended up in the Azores due to
a shipwreck and she was raped by one of the sailors. The catholic church
labeled her (the baby) as "unclean" and would not allow the marriage. So they
just lived together for 60 years and had 9 children.

I've wondered how they would label her birth.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] odd records

Greetings,

I've been reading all of the baptisms for Topo for 1860.......I've seen 2
unusual records that I've never seen before and wonder if anyone else has seen
similar records. One of them says the birth is to a solteria and in parentheses
it says (vulgar assault), the other says the woman was married but the child
was due to adultery. I had often wondered if some of those "roda" babies were
due to assault by pirates but the records never indicated it so since this one
did I guess they do put it on the records. Has anyone ever seen other records
in Sao Jorge such as these?

Regards,
Nancy Jean
