I agree Rick. It could have been that. It also could be that the "story" has gotten skewed so-to-speak in the telling. So far, I haven't found her birth record. I will eventually though, I hope. Right now my focus is on my ancestors from Sao Miguel. She was from Faial. Hopefully, by the time I switch focus, Faial will have more records on line. I would suspect that the priest knew who the parents of your 3d great grandparents were and it was more of a matter of a close relation ship and they could not get a dispensation. If you could find her birth record it would be interesting. My 3rd great grandmother according to family history was never allowed to actually marry my 3rd great grandfather because she was the result of a rape. Her mother ended up in the Azores due to a shipwreck and she was raped by one of the sailors. The catholic church labeled her (the baby) as "unclean" and would not allow the marriage. So they just lived together for 60 years and had 9 children. I've wondered how they would label her birth. One of them says the birth is to a solteria and in parentheses it says (vulgar assault), the other says the woman was married but the child was due to adultery. I had often wondered if some of those "roda" babies were due to assault by pirates but the records never indicated it so since this one did I guess they do put it on the records. Has anyone ever seen other records in Sao Jorge such as these? Regards, Nancy Jean _____ The New Busy is not the old busy. Search, chat and e-mail from your inbox.
