Hi Pat: I looked on Ancestry.com but could not find them from Hawaii to
California.

You might try going to the State Library in California. You would have to look
at the newspapers for San Francisco. Only problem is that you would have to
look at the ships arriving from Hawaii to California, for each day.
Have you tried looking in Hawaii for ships that left for California.

I used to live about 20 miles from Pleasanton.

Sorry I couldn't help you.

  Shirley,

Our Vieira Anselmo's went to Hawaii from Sao Miguel, Sao Pedro, Ribeira seca,
Ribeira Grande on the second voyage of the Highflyer and arrived April 30,
1881. The father was Jacinto Vieira Anselmo, his wife Maria Jose and sons
Manuel, August, Antonio and Angelo came initially on the Highflyer. Guilhermo
Vieira Anselmo came as a paid passenger on the City of Paris in 1884 and Jose
Vieira Anselmo arrived on the Hankow in May of 1883.

The Hawaiian Kingdom census of 1890 shows them on the Island of Hawaii in the
Hamakua District listed under the name Viera. Victor, John, Frank, Evert and
Maria were born in Hawaii. Evert died there.

They went on separate ships to California in 1893 and settled in Pleasanton.
The parents and younger children went first. They are listed in the UPEC court
8 Serpa Pinto by Oct. 15, 1893. We have never been able to find them on ships
from Hawaii to California.

Ally and I would appreciate any new ideas on how to find the ships they left
Hawaii on or anything else.

Celeste already gave us information on the Voter Registration at Cal State
Hayward and I was able to find several of them listed.

  Thanks,
  Pat (Dutra/Anselmo) Nostrome

When did your ancestors go to Hawaii? What are their names? I can probably
help you.
Just ask Celeste. Her husband and I are related.

    Yvonne,

In one of the books, or excerpt from the book, I read that during the early
1900 in California....the Portuguese from both the Madeira Islands and mainland
Portugal had settled in the San Leandro area (East Bay of San Francisco).
These Portuguese were educated and prosperous. When the Azoreans came, many
who were not educated and took labor jobs, were looked down by the mainland
Portuguese and were afraid that their status would be lowered by the newcomers.

This was still the tone in the late 1980's when meeting other Portuguese.
There was a comment made to me to the effect that... yes you are Portuguese but
you were from the Azores while they were from the Madeira Islands. It was said
in a tone that was more than pride of being from the Madeira Islands but that I
should know my lower status.

Patsy and I have great pride, love and respect in our family heritage and
the struggles that our Grt. Grandparents made in leaving their families behind
and coming to Hawaii then onto California to give us a better way of life.

While I was not raised with Portuguese traditions it has been fun to
research the traditions and incorporate them into our holidays. Something that
I can teach my son.

One of the traditions that I love is to never return a dish empty. Always
return it with cookies or other baked item.

Celest, I would love to meet you when I return home for a visit. You
remind me of my God Mother, she always was putting food on the table, even
before you sat down.

    Ally
