Edna, who did this book, was not a native speaker. She had to work from the
old Portuguese (and probably with some type of translation program) to make
it resemble English. Sort of. Here's an excerpt:

"The doctrine is such that it may not permit him to stay in good privileges
in the land, because, of the following. Hanging right away the wrong doers
and thieves, who were believed, had theft in their hands. They had now not
worked on many who were, in fact, avoiding them, without punishment...."

Huh?

The family part isn't too bad.
"The said Nuno Goncalves, son of Goncalo Vaz, The Great, has one daughter
called Isabel Nunes Botelha, that married Sebastiao Barbosa da Silve, much
discrete and generous and grand lecturer, nobleman, who lived on a farm of
Faja, at the city limits of Ponta."

There are very few dates. That's the way that Doutor Gaspar Frutuoso (c.
1522 - 1591) wrote it. The Saudades da Terra wasn't published until 1873.

More on Dr. Gaspar Frutuoso can be found on Wikipedia (it does state that
the article has some problems): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaspar_Frutuoso
