Richard, think of it as if you were researching the actual ledgers. There are 
left and a right pages. However when you cite a page, the proper way to do so 
is to refer to it is Page 48v (verso/right), or, Page 48r (reverso/left). So, 
the page on the left side is actually cited as the previous page. Of course 
this only works on ledgers that are paginated. On those which are so 
deteriorated that the actual page # is no longer visible, one can backtrack, 
and, count the pages from the last page with a readable #. If these methods 
cannot be employed, just cite it as " event/year/record # (if available).
