You are correct, trying to find a Jose (born about 5 May 1842) to a Jose & Maria Martin is too generic. You need to get a freguesia (village) over there. What research have you done on your immigrant ancestor? If you can tell us what you have done, we can suggest resources. Is there anyone in your family who might know the freguesia (village), even a partial name or a butchered name? When did he get to America and to which port?
