Perfect timing because my grandmother today was finally able to find her copy Jose's birth certificate (attached with translated version) from when she went to Terceira over 10 years ago. His birthday and mother's name on the birth certificate are different from the Sonoma County history book. Looks like he was from Lajes, Flores and his parents names are listed as Jose Martins and Catarina Florinda. Jose (the son) left Flores when he was 14 (1857) on a whaling ship and according to the Sonoma County records he arrived in the US in 1861 in Humboldt Bay where he lived for about ten years before returning to Flores to marry his wife (Sonoma County lists her name as Mary Rose). They "immediately" returned to Eureka, CA and lived there until they moved to Healdsburg, CA (Sonoma County area) in 1873 and lived in that area until he died (he's buried in a cemetery in Sebastopol, CA which is now about 30 minutes from Healdsburg). His first wife (the supposed "Mary Rose") died in 1891 after having two kids (Mary and Frank Francis), and according to the Sonoma County records he remarried to June 1892 to a Marie DeRose who they say "also was a native of the Azores islands." My mom has a subscription to Ancestry.com which is what we've used for most of this research and the local library. Finding information on Jose once he was in California hasn't been too difficult but I can't find any CA records of his first wife and wanted to see what information I could get about his parents. Any resource recommendations would be welcomed! Hopefully this isn't too long of a reply, thanks again for your quick response!
