Thanks, Kelley, I (and the whole list) can now see your name.

Nothing was attached. I checked Lajes das Flores for a Jose born 5 May
1842. There isn't one.

There's a big problem though. If your Jose was from Flores, his baptismal
would have been on the island of Faial, in their archives. If your
grandmother found his birth in the Archive on Terceira, he's not from
Flores. The archive on Terceira only hold records from Terceira, Graciosa,
and Sao Jorge islands.

So if you think he's from Flores, why didn't your grandma go to the
archives in Horta on Faial island? Why did she go to Terceira?

Has your grandmother done a DNA test? She'll either match Flores people or
the central island group. It would be helpful. It's on sale at Family Tree
DNA (FTDNA) until Aug. 31st: https://goo.gl/vTndP3 You want the Family
Finder test for her. It's a cheek swab. Depending on her age, some seniors
find the swab much easier. Some have a very difficult time making enough
saliva. If she tested on AncestryDNA, she can transfer to FTDNA.
