For initial transfers, rsync is notably slower than tar or the like (I don't
remember how Bacula does it). After the initial transfers tho, it should get
faster. If you're still seeing this slowness after a couple of transfers,
there probably is a deficiency in BackupPC's programming (or maybe you just
have a wierd corner case).

Have you tried setting up BackupPC to use tar (or smbtar) rather than rsync
for your transfers?
