Look at this from the point of view of a distributor: *Every* application vendor believes his product is a special and unique flower that deserves special treatment and should not have to follow the rules for that distribution. It is in the distributor's interest to not believe any of them--even if some of them are correct. There are battles worth fighting. This is not among them. You will not win it. At most, you will irritate the people whose job it is to make Bacula conform to the norms of the distribution it's being packed with. Parameterize all installation directories as variables, recommend everything under /opt at the Bacula site, tell everyone why, recommend a procedure for relocating Bacula from wherever the vendor put it, and then move on with life.
