Where this problem seems to occur most frequently is in changing from Emacs to XEmacs, because evidently XEmacs can't cope with performing a read operation on the fontified text. I note that Galen has recently moved from Emacs 20 to Emacs 21, so perhaps something similar happens there. I've only recently put Emacs 21 on my system, and only to do some compilation tests. For now, it's best to assume that Emacs 21 still isn't supported. Actually, while I mention that, it appears that current CVS BBDB doesn't support 19.34 when compiled, either.
