Although it works to compile, I saw far too many problems so
I went back to 2.34. To begin with, BBDB didn't get properly
loaded, so I had to load bbdb-com, bbdb-hooks and bbdb-gnus
by and (even though I called (bbdb-initialize 'gnus
'message)).

Also, and far worse, was that those pesky \201 characters
reappered in my bbdb-file. Pressed for time I gave up and
went back to the old bbdb and now things are back to normal.

Finally, it wasn't possible to save the BBDB with the CVS
version.

I'll hack bbdb-default-label-list (which in turn affects
bbdb-phones-label-list) locally to solve my original problem.
