I'm confused.  I thought the problem was that it's not valid if the  
URL field is included?

In this case you generally want to rename it to revtexfixed.bst or  
something, and use that.

I downloaded the package, and it should be straightforward to remove  
the URL field.  Just remove the line

format.url output

in all entry types that shouldn't have it, and you should be all set,  
without munging your bibtex file.

If this is going elsewhere for typesetting and you're forced to use  
the original .bst, you could also export your file as "Minimal  
BibTeX."   IIRC that won't have any custom fields.  For extra fun,  
drop your .aux file on BibDesk's main window to select only the  
entries that are cited in the paper.
