My guess is that the square taper on the inside of your left crank arm
has become deformed and the crank arm is moving in and out as you
pedal.  It comes from pedaling when the crank arm is a tiny bit loose.
Take the crank arm off and see if you can detect any non-squareness
in the socket for the bottom bracket.  If you can, that arm is
toast and needs to be replaced.

I am not a bike mechanic, though, nor do I play one on TV.
