Left and right pedals are not interchangeable.  Left pedal spindles are left
hand threaded & right pedal spindles right hand threaded.  The pedals tend
to tighten as you ride.  

Lisa, you are correct that it's probably the internal bearings in the left
pedal.

Try switching pedals.  They have parts inside the axles that can cause 
this ticking.  If you don't have an extra set, can you just swap left 
and right pedals, if only to see if it's the pedal causing the ticking?  
I had this once and it was the pedal's inner workings causing it.
