I ride both (in 26 inch), and they are both very attractive tyres. At
equal width, the Big Apple is clearly faster, and somewhat more
comfortable. The Marathon is sturdier and has more grip on loose soil
etc. Also max width is 47 mm. I have also ridden 60 mm Big Apples and
found them a bit soggy. The Big Apple is now also available in a
special lite version. Have a look at the new 2009 Schwalbe lineup
before you decide. There are a few new alternatives to the two you
mention. Apart from the Big Apple Lite, there is an updated and even
lighter Supreme, and a Marathon Extreme for rough terrain, just to
mention the most obviouis choices. For safety, nearly all Schwalbe
tyres have reflective sidewalls.
