I would agree most emphatically with Willem on this. Don't try to 
save money on tires.

One difference that I note, however, is that most people on this list 
(and on others) like Paselas. Maybe it's just my bad luck, but I have 
had nothing but trouble with the ones I've used. In the past 10 
years, I've had just one flat with Schwalbes, maybe two with 
Continental tires, and at least 10 with Paselas. (Haven't kept track 
of the mileage, but certainly 15000+, and the most part of that on 
the Contis or Schwalbes.) Gave up on the Paselas a few years ago, and 
now use nothing but the Continental TT2000s that I'm wearing out, and 
Schwalbes of various types that are the only tires I'd buy anymore 
for utility riding and touring. (There is a set of Grand Bois tires 
on the single-speed. Pricey, and also made by Panasonic!)
