I have a 29er that I use in a similar way: mostly on pavement, some gravel, and occasionally on rougher stuff. I put 47mm standard Marathons on it when I got it. The rear wore out but the front, which I then switched to the rear, is still going strong after 12K miles. My main complaint is that they have very poor side-grip for offroad use, so I've crashed a couple of times losing front traction on off- camber curves or side-sloping trails where a tire with side knobs would dig in. Next time I need a tire for it I might go with the Marathon Plus ATB, which has some side knobs.
