I commuted along that route all last winter. Having to ride along Fish Hatchery to get to work, that stretch from Wingra to the Beltline in particular was the worst part of my day.

I too chose to ride in the lane with traffic. Better to be in control in the lane with cars than it would be to slip or fall into the lane after trying to ride in the mess that was the bike lane. I had a really hard time getting respect from drivers along that stretch. I found that even if I rode in the passenger side tire track people would still try to pass me without leaving the lane. I finally had to take to riding right in the middle of the lane or, on snowy days, even in the drivers side tire track. Very sketchy.

There really needs to be better bike/pedestrian infrastructure to allow people to get from that portion of Fitchburg into Madison. Nice big bike lanes on Fish Hatchery or a separate bike path, I don't care, either way really. Very few people are bold/foolish enough to ride their bike along that road, making a car the only option for many.

Time has run out. Knowing what we know, we must act, and we must act now. To do otherwise would be an abdication of our responsibility to future generations.

Full-time motorists are nothing but a pack of cowards, anyway.

Subject: [Bikies] Fish Hatchery road

Here's a story about area man (and bikies subscriber) Doug Adler who tried to get some action about a messy section of this road:
http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/local/wonder/sos/437304

* he complains to the the city of Madison, but they ignore him because its not their jurisdiction. And apparently, uninterested in passing along the complaint to the appropriate authority.

* Dane County responds:
"county crews have been more focused on clearing and removing snow from major vehicle routes."

Fish Hatchery is *not* a major vehicle route? Huh?

* once again, bikers get screwed: either take your chances in the unplowed 'bike lane', or take your chances with hostile motorists.
