Even more proper "netiquette" might require a request from the public commenter before making off list "private comments" to a thread on a MOST public list.  ("But you probably knew that?")  Remember, every word on this list shows in google for many years.  There is an archive and search to boot.  And all one's remarks can be lifted out without regard to the contextual thread. --------food for thought?

One thing though. At least I had the courage to say what was on my mind to
the listserv, not dash off a private email. Talk about cowardise.

Proper netiquette says you don't redirect private emails to a public
list. But you probably knew that.
