RE: Whitney Way at Odana

The joint Westmorland / Midvale Heights neighborhood plan contains specific
recommendations to improve the bicycle crossing at Whitney Way near the
beltline to connect to the new path being discussed which will carry folks
further west. It will be the new 'missing link' until addressed. Alder Chris
Schmidt was instrumental (before he was an alderperson) in the development of
the neighborhood plan, so presumably there is leadership support at the city
council to get this done. But I haven't seen any specific plans... (not that I
am in a position to 'see' anything). Is the Whitney Way at Odana intersection
on a bicycling infrastructure improvements list, but just hasn't bubbled up to
a high enough priority to being addressed?

The completion of a path going further west around the West Towne Mall to High
Point Road will make the Whitney Way at Odana intersection an obvious painful
gap. All of these steps take time, but I hope the gap is next on the list after
the path west to High Point Road is done.

A couple of years ago there was a bicycle fatality by a drunk/drugged driver
who came off the Beltline northbound on Whitney Way and did a
hit-and-run-and-drag at the intersection we're all talking about. That
bicyclist needed a better option than being in the midst of traffic and no bike
lane.

George
