It seems at this point that Thunderbird has deleted all these messages in 
the folder, but hasn't expunged them yet. It's also apparent that this is 
too late in the process - something has probably gone wrong at an earlier 
stage. Could you please repeat the strace, but this time attach it right 
after starting up Thunderbird?
