Today June 12, we heard the Dickcissel before we saw it and thanks to the kind birder who pointed out the location. As you walked the path south from the road way there is a stand of trees, behind which are a few dead stumps. The Dickcissel was perched on the top of the tallest stump. We were able to see it as we moved along the path to the east and then turned south, just before the 90 degree turn toward the hydro lines, we were looking westward . We stayed in this area for about an hour and were treated to seeing the Dickcissel several times. He seemed to be on the move, but continued to return to these stumps. As we were watching the bird we heard a 2nd one calling as well.
Other birds of note: Eastern Kingbird, lots of Bobolinks, Savannah Sparrow, Am Goldfinch, Cedar Waxwings. Directions: The pull-off with the chain across the road on the south side of Dundas is WEST of Tremaine Rd. and west of Hwy 25 (Bronte Road). The turn-off for parking, a lane with a chain across it, A large "local attractions" highway sign is right beside it on the south side of Dundas. Park and walk the road/tractor path south. It turns east, south, then east again to join up with the hydro right-of-way and the Bronte Park horse trail. Continue south to the hydro pole with two guy-wires; it is the 12th pole south of Dundas. The bushes and trees directly after and to the left of the trail at this point, where it makes a short detour to avoid a gully, was where the bird was singing. It preferred the bare branches on the south-east side of the trees. I saw no sign of a metal sign with a number 85 on it, but if you walk farther down the path, you come to a big Trans-Canada Pipeline on the left with a big #14. You may need to search this whole area. Sue & Dan Suess Mississauga, ON ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
