You can put trunks in groups then you can create a dialplan that picks the
outbound channel based on how many channels are currently in use in each
group. Not much different than knowing that a PRI only takes 23 calls and
the 24th through 46th need to use a different channel, 47th through 69th the
next, etc.

(In the TDM world you would probably just put "x" PRI's into a group) but in
this scenario you have limited bandwidth on the connection, so you can use
this functionality to limit the number of calls that go in/out a particular
trunk group which in turn is tied to the particular connection.

David,

What's "creative group allocations" ?

Also not ideal, but you could do multiple DSL lines with creative group
allocations to distribute the load.

I did consider that. It might be a viable option. I'm dealing with people
that are very uncomfortable with trying new things, and are likely to be
critical of sound quality. Personally, I can tell the difference between
ulaw and g729 in a heartbeat, but maybe others won't. I suppose I could
provision the primary phones with ulaw and compress everybody else.

Have you put people on g729 in large numbers (office people?), and have they
noticed?
