Hi Sue, I have one ewe that has twined every time she has lambed. So for the last six lambings she has rejected the first born lamb. Regardless of size. She will clean and nurse the lamb until the second (which is often smaller) is born and starts to nurse. Then the ewe will violently reject the first lamb.
I have tried to put her into a contraption my hubby made to contain her so the lamb can nurse, but she fights like crazy. So, I have bottle raised 3 and gave the last away the second it was rejected to a retired neighbor to raise. Now, none of her ewe lambs have exhibited this type of behavior. The reasons I keep this ewe is...1. She started our flock. She was the kids pet and is easily handled. Also, the rest follow her when I call her. 2. She produces nice lambs and is a good mother to the one she chooses. So, there you have it...My experiences with "Sweetie Pie", our matron ewe.
