Yes, Rhonda, there are exceptions. I had a guard dog that bonded with our
donkey. They both were babies when bonding with the sheep, so they worked quite
well together.
When I lost the old male guard dog, I still had the donkey, he continues to
be fine with the other guard dogs. However, the donkey became a problem with
the sheep. Last spring I put the donkey in with the ewes that were lambing
thinking that he would take care of them and had the dogs with the others out in
the pasture. Well, I woke up the next morning to find the donkey had put all
of the lambs in a corner and was not letting the ewes have the babies.
The donkey now lives with the cows and horses and does just fine.
My guard dogs are a true blessing and I will never have anything else! Only
after you have experienced the bond between a guard dog and his stock can you
appreciate how wonderful they are. I have story after story of how amazing
they are!
