I adopted a 2-year-old donkey from the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Program operated by the BLM. Sadie tamed down very fast and I put her in with my pregnant ewes within two weeks of bringing her home. My senior ewe had her lambs early and Sadie witnessed the birth. I jugged the ewe and lambs for a couple of days and Sadie glued herself to the lambs with only a chainlink fence separating them. As far as she was concerned, those were HER lambs.

The day came to turn the ewe and lambs out with the flock and Sadie was outraged when the lambs followed their natural mother instead of Sadie. From that point on, she was mean to the sheep and lambs, chasing them and ausing them to live in perpetual anxiety. I'm sure some of her antics were just burro games, but the sheep didn't appreciate them. I had to eventually move Sadie to a new home.
