Modifier only activation is working for me on my iMac. It's an Early 2006 model, with only a Core Duo processor, and System Profiler tells me that it is not capable of running in 64 bit, so everything is in 32 bit. That may make a difference. See what happens if you open the Get Info window for Quicksilver.app and tell it to run in 32 bit (I don't even have the option on my computer, but your MacBook Pro should be 64 bit capable and therefore present the option).
