Thanks for your reply Rob. I don't think it's either of those things: the 
Contacts plug-in has never been enabled, and I have no aliases to network 
files. It might not be related to scanning the catalogue: I've tried 
setting it to scan only once a day, but I've still experienced the 
unresponsiveness more than once during the day.

May I ask: if I manage to catch it unresponsive again in time to Force 
Quit, is there any log generated that could potentially be useful in 
figuring out what's going on? I would really like to get to the bottom of 
it, it's very upsetting to my work habits!
