May I ask: if I manage to catch it unresponsive again in time to Force Quit, is there any log generated that could potentially be useful in figuring out what's going on? I would really like to get to the bottom of it, it's very upsetting to my work habits!

Keep it running and go into Activity Monitor. Find the Quicksilver process, select it, then choose “Sample Process” from the gear menu.

To increase your chances of catching it in time, you might want to keep Activity Monitor running with “quicksilver” in the search box.
