I agree too, but recommended != required. Many times users don't know if they need or will want a dependency that is not required. I feel the Recommended section provides advice to users in that situation. Of course users are free to not follow the recommendation. That's a part of the choice the getting in BLFS. My position is that packages in the Recommended vs Optional sections should mostly reflect the editor's judgement of what the user will want when using the package.
