To some. To others it is a step in a direction towards too much
automation and handholding of the Linux OS. I am in the crowd that
thinks it's great. :-)
I'm also in the boat that it's a great thing. Basically, most of the
D-BUS/HAL type of stuff spawned from something called Project Utopia.
The mantra here is basically that things "just work" from a hardware
perspective. Here's a little background on that:

The HAL maintainer, David Zuethen, is doing an awesome job of getting
all the bits organized, as well as getting buy-in from the distros and
the desktop camps (gnome and kde). To see a great demo of everything
working in gnome, take a look at his blog (you need Flash to watch the
demo, I think).

Keep in mind that this is a fast moving target right now. It's
definitely usable right now, but some things still need work or are
being pushed off into new packages (PolicyKit, pm-utils). From my
observations, it seems that things will be more stable by gnome-2.16.
Don't let that keep you from playing, though!
