First of all make sure that you do not have "hide inactive icons" in the notification part of your Taskbar properties. To check this go to Setting on the Start Menu and then Taskbar properties. Tab down until you hear this option. If this is checked press spacebar to uncheck. OK out and that should solve the problem.

For several years I've always put Jaws in the System Tray to clear the Desktop. Jaws is not on the Desktop and not in the System Tray.
