Audio/data CD types are related to what info/how you write to either a
writable or rewritable CD - the actual CD type itsself doesn't make a
difference except that some older CD players aren't happy with rewriteable
CDs, plus, the plain writeable ones will be a bit cheaper.

Basically, it comes down to the software that helps you decide what type of
CD to write.

In other words, when you put a blank CD in the writer, then paste stuff
thereto, then eject it (in Windows XP anyway), the CD writing wizard will
pop up, and there you can choose what type of CD to write etc. and while
there are other bits of accessible software out there, this sometimes works
for me since there are radio buttons therein which allow you to choose the
type you want to write.

FWIW, though, some of the modern CD/DVD players can in fact still play
CDs/DVDs with the .MP3 filews written thereto as data files, which means
that, for example, the last time I had a party, I had basically 7 data CDs
with around 180 MP3 songs on each of them, and the DVD player was just set
to shuffle the contents.
