Matt, there are rulers that have a sliding centering gizmo built in. these are for sightlings, but for centering should work. they look like an old fashioned flat ruler but have a moving pointer on one edge and another that lies between the pointer and one end. this second pointer follows the center of the distance covered by the end pointer.
