FWIW, another list I'm on has two modes -- reply to sender ("pure") and
reply to list ("plain"). People subscribe to one or the other list as they
choose (almost all on the plain version, but no one forced to pick one
method over the other), but all the content is identical otherwise.

Seems like a very clean solution that keeps everyone happy, if you feel
like setting up the list software and policies to accomodate it.
