I used to use [x]emacs, having learned about computers 'n' stuff at MIT.
However, I switched to vim and have not looked back. As others have
mentioned in this space gvim does excellent syntax highlighting in perl.
And if you use vim on *NIX, you can also use it on M$ windows.
And customization is rampant on both editors, you just need to decide
which language to use:
lisp or vim macro
One cool thing about vim is that you can compile a hook to perl in there
so that you can use perl regexps to do substitutions or whatever.
