It would be if you were to start a new emacs for every file you wished to
edit, but nobody I know of does that.  Even emacs diehards would consider
that to be pretty insane.

My current emacs session has 40 buffers open, and has been running since
mid-December.  (Although I was away for a few weeks.)  40 buffers is in the
low range of what's fairly typical for me.  

To quickly edit a config file, many emacs fans use jed.

Using emacs doesn't cause more pollution than vi.  ;)
