>If you are looking for a book to begin intelligent debate at a school, I would recommend "Women Can't Hear What Men Don't Say" as a starter. Dr Farrell is not an "angry divorced father", and has been elected three times to the Board of the National Organisation of Women in New York City, probably the only man to have done so.
This is highly misleading. True, when he espoused a kind of liberal feminist politics in the 1970s (e.g. in his book "The Liberated Man"), Farrell was on the board of NOW. Not the national board, but the New York City chapter. But since then, he and his writings have moved progressively to the right, to an increasingly anti-feminist account of how men are now the real victims, and he and his affiliates have been heavily criticised by NOW and other feminist advocates. And these days, Farrell is one of the *key* advocates in the US of fathers' rights, both in his writings and his institutional positions. (I've met the guy. I thought he was charming, intelligent, and deeply mistaken.) See a review of Farrell's "Women can't hear..." here: http://www.xyonline.net/womencanthear.shtml And see my review of his earlier "The myth of male power" here: http://www.xyonline.net/Myth.shtml And see other critiques of the "fathers' rights" politics Farrell and others espouse here: http://www.thelizlibrary.org/liz/ For people after accessible introductions to 'men's issues', I'd recommend the following; Cooper, Mick and Baker, Peter. (1996). The MANual: The Complete Man's Guide to Life. London: Thorsons. Doyle, James A. (1989). The Male Experience. (2nd edition) Iowa: W.M.C. Brown. Fanning, Patrick and Matthew McKay. (1993). Being a Man: A Guide to the New Masculinity. Oakland, CA: New Harbinger Publications. Johnson, Allan G. (1997). The Gender Knot: Unraveling our Patriarchal Legacy. Philadelphia: Temple University Press. Kaufman, Michael. (1993). Cracking the Armour: Power, Pain and the Lives of Men. Toronto, Ontario: Penguin. Levant, Ronald F., With Kopecky, Gina. (1996). Masculinity Reconstructed: Changing the Rules of Manhood at Work, in Relationships, and in Family Life. New York: Plume.
