If a boy (or a girl) is measured as significantly more confident about their ability than their performance shows they have a right to be, what is loaded about the term "over-confidence"? Or are you just being grumpy because you don't like the implications of the research? In any case, we should wait until we read the actual study so we can see if the researcher chose those words - she may not have. Yes, I am grumpy, but not at the research implications. Let the results and implications fall where they may. Correct, she may not have chosen those words, but somebody did - those words when juxtaposed with the girl-applied adjective "realistic" perhaps hint at an agenda. > What exactly has been going on in schools throughout the West in > the last 20 years if not precisely that [EMAIL PROTECTED]&*!^ I think you'll find that 20 years is no time at all when it comes to addressing deeply embedded attitudes about gender. Do you have a problem with girls being told they are just as capable as boys? It's all the time in the world, given the huge resources and efforts poured into change. Yes, I do have a problem with that equating. I've been telling many classes of boys in recent years that they are less capable than girls at staying focused, handing work in one time, sticking at a task until it is finished etc etc. But I really got pissed when the women of Harvard successfully hissy-fitted against Larry Summers for suggesting that there may be other reasons for male achievement in maths and science than the ones routinely trotted out. Their mental inflexibility illustrated the case right then and there why women will never match men in any numbers in the upper reaches of those disciplines.
