Hi, I think Mark has a point. It would be interesting to know if Gerry would have found the version below equally acceptable.
Cheers, Vincent Patrick ---------------------------------------- Bravado puts girls in language fast lane Girls have an overinflated sense of their language ability compared with boys and their overconfidence translates to greater success in school. A study of 1323 girls and boys at three co-educational high schools in Sydney has found girls and boys are equally competent in language. Boys were found to be less interested and less confident, but more realistic about their abilities than girls, who overrated their competence. That overconfidence led to more girls choosing more difficult language subjects for the HSC and aiming towards high-status language-related careers. Dr Harry Watt, of Monash University, said his three-year study of Sydney students in years 7 to 11 suggested boys needed to be told they were just as capable as girls. Strategies to increase boys' participation could include linking language to technical uses, such as science, he said.
