Malaina:

The best audio program I have found for Windows is called Wave Pad. It lets you do a lot of things: filter out background hiss, save a file not only as a different format but also with the volume set to be higher or lower, copy, cut, and paste sections of audio, insert or overlay other audio files, and more. I have used it for months, and JAWS works with it well. For the sighted, there is a fancy graph and all that, but you can use the hotkeys and a good ear and do the same thing.

If you do a Google search for Wave Pad, NCH Swift Sound, free sound editing software, or variations, you should find it. There are two versions: regular (free) and Masters (priced). Regular allows you to do all but a few functions of masters, but the restrictions only apply to things that you probably wouldn't use anyway. The Master's edition is free for a 15 day trial, though.

Let me know if you get this and need more help with Jaws,
Alex

Subject: RE: Mp3 recording on the BN --was Re: [Braillenote] vote
now

I would love to be able to record class on my Braille note
mpower. I was
recording class the other day just to see how long I could before
time ran
out and I got a good chunk of class though. But I had to put
those files
on my flashdrive cause my bn was running out of memory. Everyone
is say
ing how wav files can be converted into mp3s but I don't know how
to do
that. I only use a laptop and now my bn so I don't know what
program I
would need to convert. It would be nice if I already had a
program but
not sure.
Malaina> Hi Joseph and Lysander,

In refference to the idea that the purpose of the recorder is
only for
notes, I would bet that Jonathan would tell you that the
recorder is for
what ever you want it for. I've heard him say that it'd even be
great if
you
could edit audio files with the BN. So the "scope" is only as
small or
large
as your willing to allow it to be.

In terms of licensing, there are freeware encoders and licensed
encoders.
This isn't my area of expertise, but my Iriver was very
inexpensive and
if
they can put an encoder in there, it's possible for low or no
cost in the
BN.

I have heard, again, that when DAISY comes to the BN that
encoding on the
fly will be closer.

This, I think, is in large part about space. It'd be much
better to take
up
only 1 meg a minute instead of 5 megs a minute for high quality
recordings.
Imagine the space saved when a student records class lectures
with a BN if
the BN could record to mp3.
Additionally, who wants to shuffle a bunch of .wav files to a
pc, convert
and reshuffle.

This is all academic because it isn't possible yet, but I'd like
to hope
that we're headed in that direction.

Rusty

This is Joseph. There is a program out there called CDEx. It
can convert
between mp3 and .wav files. So, for example, if you wisi to
convert a note
that has been recorded on the BN to an mp3 file, you can simply
transfer
the
file to a computer and convert it that way. Recording software
that runs
on
the computer these days allows you to convert between multiple
file
formats.

The main issue is one of licensing. Since the BN is a
commercial product,
they'd have to license rights to use the encoder. Why do that,
when you
can
record in WAV and compress it to MP3 on a computer for free? The
BN is a
notetaker, not a recording studio. The recording feature is
meant for
taking
notes. I wish people would keep things in scope.

Hi folks,
It has been suggested that recording to mp3 or encoding on the
fly is
not possible, or that conversion from .wav to .mp3 would be
better.

Assuming that you accept the limitations that come with mp3
encoding,
encoding on the fly isn't a problem at all. I own a tiny Iriver
mp3
player which records mp3 files on the fly. It's probably got
one tenth
or less the power of the BN and it runs on one AA battery. So
encoding
on the fly isn't a problem.
I have heard that this capability may come when DAISY support is
implemented. Get out your check books. :-)

Au,
That does make sense. Maybe it's much better to stick with wav.

It isnt' really possible to record in mp3, as you would be
compressing on
the fly as it were. What would be nice is a wav to mp3
converter,
but on the
other hand it would keep needing to be updated because the codecs
are
constantly being worked on, and then you'd get into licensing
costs for it,
not to mention that then people will be clammering for AAC and OG
support
which all have the same inherrant problems as MP3, etc.

I'd love to be able to record in mp3. I also think it would be
nice to
have a program that could zip and unzip things. I'm not sure if
that's
possible, but as I don't use a pc, it would be nice.

hi fellow braillenote fans. I was on the phone with Dean Jackson
the other
day and was extolling the virtues of adding a financial
transaction
component to keysoft.
Now is the time we should submit our desires for such a program,
just a
simple checkbook utility like charles crawford's talking
checkbook program.
So, I am officially casting my vote for our illustrious marketing
manager's
ears, OK MOSEN!
