Peter: The error itself is an SMTP error, and I most often have seen 10060 SMTP errors.
Error 10050 WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROTECT OUTGOING MAIL (SMPT PROTOCOL). ERROR 10050 When I have seen error messages like this, they often turn out to be SSL-related issues. I have been able to cure such errors by completely deleting all mail folders and allowing BrailleNote to recreate them. Depending on your use of BrailleNote, this is a bit apinful, but worth considering if it's not too disruptive.
