Hi Karen and all who have contributed great ideas to this discussion. The 
development team and I were talking about this very issue quite recently. 
It seems to me that, broadly speaking, we have two options. We could have 
an append mode that automatically appended all typed text to the bottom of 
the file, or some command that disables our "space with" functions. Maybe 
a really foolproof command like space with all eight dots could be used to 
toggle this on and off. Do people have a preference for either an append 
mode or a function that disables the space bar in conjunction with other 
letters?

Exactly.  That's what I had in mind.  I've been placed at the top of
documents without warning more than once and I've been quite annoyed. What
do you all at PDI think about a toggle command?
