Ok, for priming (bottling) use, sugar is just as good, and probably easier to get right thr first time. Yes, you must boil it with a bit of water, cool it down, and add to the beer. Stir well, so it gets properly mixed, and you get equally much sugar in every bottle. As to how much sugar, see the stuff at http://www.haandbryg.dk/eftergaering.html Don't worry about it, most first-time brewers get a good beer out of it. Just be careful about cleaning and sanitizing your fermenter, and everything else that may get in touch with the wort after it has been boiled. And be patient enough to let the fermentation go to all the way, even if you don't see much activity after the first explosive start.
