I was getting problems in the extensions (forest, I think was the main
stumbling block) which seems not to be supported any longer.

I don't experience any problems using a newer version of Mercurial with OpenJDK. AFAIK this is a minimum version requirement, not an exact one.

Same here. I've been using later versions with both IcedTea and
OpenJDK for some time now; basically whatever my distro provides.
